The Dong Pavilion is a traditional space for the Dong people, a structure used in field labor for resting. The cedar trees in the mountains and the children of the villages grow taller alongside, and once the trees are tall enough to be used for their wood, they are transformed into homes for the next generation, as well as into pavilions and drum towers for congregation. The actual process of woodworking becomes an abiding support during this transition into a different stage of life.

Found in the Guangzhou Yue He Flower, Bird, Fish & Insect Market, this birdcage is made from bamboo that has been grown for over ten years in the mountains of south China and subsequently let to dry for a further ten years in order to retain its shape. The form of the cage is a southern Chinese style and usually used to keep the lovebird ( 相思鸟 ). Because of its broad shape, it is named the ‘water chestnut cage’ ( 马蹄笼 ). The smaller cage located within is for keeping a grasshopper as the bird’s food.

Living Space: Huo #1” is based on a re-observation of the use of traditional Chinese seating furniture (such as the “long bench” since the Ming and Qing dynasties) in contemporary work and life, resulting in the concept of a three-dimensional space with an upper and a lower level. The two-level plank of “Living Space: Huo #1” is penetrated by an A-shaped bench legs that is narrow on the top and wide on the bottom. The whole piece of furniture is made with woodwork mortises and tenons, and not a single nail (including wooden nails) was used in it. In the treatment of the structure, the mortise and tenon fitting between the bench feet and the upper plank, the rectangular frames under the upper plank and the installation of the bench foot through the lower plank together provide a high degree of stability. On the basis of this novel structure, the unique double-space moulding and appropriate scale of “Living Space: Huo #1” take shape.
Living Space: Huo #1” responds to the needs of today’s everyday living space with its flexible functionality. The upper and lower levels, and the surroundings of “Living Space: Huo #1“, can be transformed into a multi-purpose living space at any time in response to different daily situations:
• When the upper level is used as a desktop, it can be used for computers, drinking tea, playing musical instruments, enjoying refreshment, etc., and the lower level can be used to place and store various living appliances, tea wares, books, etc.; it can be a hub for friends and family gatherings;
• When the upper level is used as a seat, you can comfortably rest your feet on or take things from the lower level;
• One can also creatively comprehend and explore the use of “Living Space: Huo #1” in one’s own living space according to their daily and personal needs.
